Like many of us, I suspect, I learned this at school; so I thought I already knew it well by the time it became a placard on the new Cardiff Bay development.
But I didn't know that 'ivory, apes and peacocks' was a direct quotation from the King James Bible (1 Kings 10:22); I suspect contemporary readers would have spotted that.
