My video mashup is set to a song that I wrote called Buy In Buy Out. I originally wrote the song about Ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff. After watching the Enron documentary The Smartest Guys in the Room, I was inspired to do more research. My own god-father was the CEO of Arthur Anderson, Enron's accounting firm, 2 months before Enron went bankrupt and disrupted the stock market and the world. 6 months prior to that Arthur Anderson was shredding Enron documents as fast as they could.
I began working on this MashUp with a question in mind: Where's your money? It is a statement that is wide open for interpretation but in every interpretation there is urgency and even fear. I labeled my piece: Buy In Buy Out - Mashup Commentary on Free Market Fraudsters. I think that Bernie Madoff and Enron are representative of a type of white collar crime, that of abusing the free market by fraud. I tried to find footage that would support my ideas on YouTube and screenshot them. I also linked this to the current stymied stock market and the Stock Market Crash of 1929. I found footage of the 1929 Wall Street Stock Market Crash which I thought was evocative of these ideas and questions. Our current financial meltdown started when many companies discovered their derivative-based bundle loans weren't worth anything. The companies who sold those financial packages were knowingly committing fraud. The lack of confidence still effects small banks and small business loaning.
I tried to shed light with this video mashup and accompanying song on the people and companies who brought on the Recession by fraudulent means lest we forget, but at the same time, I think the piece asks many questions: where is the money, where was the money, and is there any money left for those who were defrauded?
But beyond the specifics, we all can ask ourselves this basic question:
Where's your money?
My sources came from YouTube itself. I simply cut up small, Fair Use-sized portions of & recombined things already available on the web. I reflected back from sources such as: the Associated Press, ABC, CBS,a NYSE tour, 1929 Wall Street Stock Market Crash documentary piece, C-SPAN, and Fall of Enron.
