And so it began. On 15 July 1996, the U.S. gained a new 24 hour news channel which was then a joint venture between NBC News and Microsoft.

For some hours leading up to the launch, MSNBC was running a countdown of continuous commercials for their new cable network. When the counter finally reached zero, MSNBC came on the air for the first time. Jodi Applegate (who later left the NBC family after her failed "Later Today" show) was the first anchor.

(Apologies for the tracking issues -- this is from a VHS tape recorded at 6 hour, EP speed.)

  • @fryersoncaptain I thought that the second that I saw it!

  • I think MSNBC launched too early. Most people weren't ready for the integration of tv and web. Shame really especially now that it turned into Fox News for the left.

  • Good start, but what a waste of television it became....now its just a collection of liberal prejudice and hatred spewing out endless diarrhea.

  • Jodi is fat.

  • @fryersoncaptain wow it does

Does anyone else think that the text in the lower right corner reading "msnbc" looks an awful lot like their new logo's text?

  • Brian Williams, Tom Brokaw, Katie Couric, Jodi Applegate, Tim Russet, Keith Olberman, Chris Matthews, Rachel Maddow, those all the people of MSNBC in the last 15 years of their existents.

  • WOW...brings back memories.
