  • The first time I heard this (on WJUF-FM, when they still played classical music), I was driving to teach a class. Cantus Arcticus affected me so deeply that I almost had to pull off the road. Almost immediately I bought Rautavaara's Naxos CD, which also includes his Piano Concerto No. 1 and Symphony No. 3. Extraordinary music.

  • @ejourneys The first time I heard this (our music class went to see it live!), I thought "Ew... What's this? Do I have to listen to this?" and "Where's the stop button?". I waited until 3:30 (in the video), then I thought "Hey, that's not that bad...". From 13:51, I got goosebumps (also from the sound of a live orchestra).

So please, before you say "Ew..., what's that shit?" and pause it, start listening from 3:30, and enjoy this masterpiece of music.

If you still don't like it, it's fine too.

  • @TheMylium Just to clarify -- I loved this music from the start. (As you can see from my earlier comment, I almost immediately purchased the CD.) I almost pulled off the road because I was in tears from its beauty and poignancy.

I have had experiences like yours, in which the music had to grow on me. One example was Prokofiev's Scythian Suite, which I did not like at my first hearing (back in the 1970s), but which I soon grew to love as well.

Thank you for listening with an open mind.

  • @ejourneys I know, I know. My appeal was for those who thought like me, the first time they hear this =)

  • .....That's right, it is difficult, but fascinating. I have listened 2 times, and is remarkably in harmony with nature. I loved!!! Thanks

  • In union with nature.

  • i studied this song for a music test on 1am .. listened it all way through because couldnt stop

  • @ejourneys I totally share this experience. I, too, heard this amazing piece of music the first time on the radio while I was driving... and was absolutely carried away. The very next day I went and bought the Naxos CD. That was five years ago. Ever since I am listening to it over and over, it just keeps moving me deeply. Magical.

  • wow, this is stunningly beautiful, if you give it the time and attention (and in my case, the neccessary volume for the bass). And Myllium, you're right, for people who aren't impressed right away, listening from 3:30 or 4:46 should definitely change their mind. On second listening, i enjoyed all of it immensely!

  • @TheMylium Thanks. :-)
