  • Supposedly, they whirl like this when alarmed. Otherwise they cruise around looking for mates and food -- but who doesn't? Mostly eat other insects. I also read that they may be able to ride a wave of surface tension created by a chemical they release that smells of apples -- but who doesn't?

  • Why do they whirligig like that? Seems like it would cost a lot of energy, but perhaps its also antipredatory defense? Do they feed on surface "film?"
