In Pagan Kadazan, headhunting used to be a revered custom. In those days skulls were significant not only religiously but also socially. Skulls were presented as dowry to the bride, without which a man cannot get married. In Kadazan society, particularly that in Penampang region, the skulls are to be fed with blood in a ceremony called Magang. The pictures are related to the Magang ceremony in Monsopiad, Penampang. Unlike other cultures where the skulls are held communally, all the 42 skulls shown here were collected by just one man, Monsopiad, making him legendary in his time. Thank you.

  • xcuse me 4 barging in. theres no such thing as hdhuntin 4 KDZN bcoz all KDZN live near the sea AND was sppose 2 b dusun panansawa/ponongisawa(lowlands), fact n evidence proved that ONLY dusun ponongisarayoh hdhunts whereas all headhunters of dusun tribe r from highlands NOT lowlands.. another fact is the term KDZN was invented around 1960s n the most important thing is, KDZN does not hv a proper term 4 hdhuntin; pangazou/pangayou=survey(look for enemy/victim), proper term; MISASANGOD=hd decap

  • @onyx1304

    1. Kadazan term was not invented in 1960s, we have seen this word being used by Owen Rutter in his book published in 1929, so we can safely say that the term exists well before 1960.

    2. Headhunting dies much earlier in the Coastal districts compared to the inland districts. Sir spenser St. John says that it disappears to some extent by 1858 there.

    3. Living near the sea does not rule out headhunting practice. These people live along certain rivers whr attack may hav been made.

  • @Neezam85 real headhunter from tambunan. the dusun tagahas people.

  • Kadazan is new in Sabah, existed during the era of Donald stephen grandfather. ethnic village and are the original entik. the evidence and the fact they went to Tambunan, Tuaran, Keningau, etc. Membakut. There are also groves of penampang

  • dusun= degradatory term by the bruneis. similar to the 'nigger' term for african americans.

kadazan= invented in 1960's in order to unify the tribal people of north borneo. similar to native indians, we call them indians as a generalization. but to the indians, there are not indians, they are known for their tribe of origin. example, cheyene, mojave, mohawk.

so how did our ancestors address themselves in back then? "my name is xx, i come from the tribe/land yy"?.
