This is a travertine dome formed by deposited minerals from the waterfall. It periodically collapses and is gradually reformed again. The dome is generally hollow because deposition/growth only occurs in areas where water splashes, and so it naturally tends to form a shell; if you look through some of the waterfall-veiled openings you find rich caverns lined with moss and other water loving plants.

  • Very cool video! My son and I hiked there from Phantom Ranch in Nov 2009. My son went under the falls, but it was a little chilly for me. I took a lot of pics, but I wish I had taken some video; video shows the falls in much more detail than a still pic. I enjoyed oyur video. Thanks for sharing.
