This piece is a response to William Sledd's video titled "Reflections Of Stupidity".

In this nine-minute "lecture", Dustin Hsiao (host of "Ask Stupid Kid") discusses prejudice, minorities, and intolerance. Dustin first explains the idea of the "other" in relation to evolutionary psychology, taking us back to prehistoric times; helping us grasp the very science behind "others" and stigmatization.

Using his own experiences as a disabled person with cerebral palsy, Dustin then covers defamatory or otherwise hurtful language. He shows the evolution of a given word, how words progress from a shameless uttering to an outright insult, showing ways to actively sculpt the river of language rushing around us.

Dustin finishes by outlining a philosophy which effectively halts prejudice towards the individual and helps spread the words of tolerance and community desperately needed within our modern society.

  • I like your videos by the way :D I started watching a few days ago, starting with the oldest and this is where I've gotten so far (not very far yet I know). You have a great attitude :) also I really like your opening theme.

  • Hey, good talk. You know I learned about the idea of turning words around like you mentioned in some class about linguistics, can't remember if it was morphology or sociolinguistics and can't seem to find it anymore. I also forgot if it had a name, I mean the process of bringing about such change. At any rate, the gay community did something like that for some words before, I think "queer" was one of them. Pretty interesting stuff.

  • Hey,

Thanks for watching (listening?). I'm not sure why you're thanking me but you're welcome. Glad you liked it.

    Rock on,

    Dustin

  • I'm so mad that I don't have time to finish watching this, but I think you hit the nail on the head with this right here:

They're just a bunch of letters strung together.

    THANK YOU SO MUCH.
