La Mujer Obrera was organized in 1981 to improve conditions in the factories that employed many Mexican Immigrant Women. This organization now provides a place where women learn vocation skills, cultural enrichment, and educational programs. The organization opened a Mercado that has served as an economic development neighborhood that allows women to run businesses, sell hand made goods, and bring the marketplace of Mexican culture to the United States. The Mercado offers fresh groceries, dry goods, household items, artisan crafts and "food court" that serves a vast array of dishes. The economic model of empowering women entrepreneurs through this economic neighborhood model is the reason the Women of La Mujer Obrera are worthy recipients of this award.
