The Iraqi government has criticised US military chief Mike Mullen for warning of "major security losses" if Iraq does not pass a key security deal.

Previously, US Defense Secretary Robert Gates has warned of "dramatic consequences" if Washington and Baghdad do not agree a security deal on US forces in Iraq.

In an unexpected move, Iraq's cabinet is demanding changes to a draft deal already agreed with Washington, which would allow US forces to stay in Iraq until 2011.

The draft has also been strongly opposed by the faction led by radical Shia cleric Moqtada Sadr, who brought thousands of supporters on to the streets of Baghdad on Saturday in protest. It has also been opposed by Sunni Muslim clerics and other opposition parties in Iraq.

Inside Story asks what is likely to happen after the December 31 deadline?

  • All this western thinktank propaganda is rediculous! Get out of Iraq and let the people there shape their future!

  • Right on Iraq!! I'm glad you can see through the blood covered fangs of US militarism. Keep your sovereignty, keep your innate human rights not to be murdered, and to prosecute those who do murder. Keep your country!

  • I would also like to say that we in the West are talking quite a bit these days about Israel and we are not happy with how thy have conducted themselves in Gaza. The truth about the Jews is reaching us here now despite our own media previously blocking such things.

Israel needs to remember it's place or perhaps the next country the United States will be attacking will be to liberate the Palastinians.

it wouldn't cost much to transport the troops to that region at this point...

  • I think you people don't understand Americans as well as you claim.

When I was 10 years old our school had a small Olympic games for fun.

Each class in the school had to create a flag of a real country to represent in the games.

The best artist of each class drew the flag. My class represented Iraq in these games. I was the one who spent many hours drawing and coloring a perfect copy of the Iraqi flag.

Would Arab schools do such a thing?

    We never hated you.

    You hated us.

    Parades on sept 11?

    :(

  • But....but i thought you were there to "liberate" them?

  • Iraqi souvereignty?Iraq is a conquered nation - they should shut up!

  • What if it is not ratified? Will America leave? Be nice, but it wouldnt fix the problem of their oil being under Iraqi sand

    Israel #1 Woohoo!

  • Watch out, this is Muqtada's way back into Iraq.

  • Believe me, they don't want to be there. It's probably easy for you to think that they are nazis or something, but that's a nice point of convenience for you.

  • The United States owes Iraq... What they owe is debatable, but our meddling in that country predicates a permanent oath of aid to Iraq. What we've done, starting with Hussein, and ending with this war, needs to be addressed. We can't leave them, we married them.

  • That's a good way to start another war right there... Have some discipline, for Christ's sake.
