At the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, Tommie Smith and his teammate John Carlos came in first and third, respectively, in the 200-meter dash. As they received their medals, each man raised a black-gloved fist, creating an image that will always stand as an iconic representation of the complicated conflations of race, politics, and sports.

  • Thank you Tommie Smith & John Carlos for raising human rights for all Americans- both of you represent the best America has to offer to the world.

  • Let's not forget Peter Norman who received the silver medal. While he did not raise his fist as Smith and Carlos did (he didn't feel that it was appropriate) he wore a badge in support. He was never selected for the Australian Olympic team ever since that moment.

Peter Norman died in 2006. Tommie Smith and John Carlos both gave eulogies and were pallbearers at his funeral.

  • Dr Tommie Smith and dr John Carlos they are conquerers!

  • After how they treat this athletes he still make it to doctor. Respect!

  • @jonnyjera - Sorry for this late reply. The info came from an interview with Matt Norman, the nephew of Peter Norman. In the interview Matt recalled personal conversations between him and his uncle. Matt Norman produced and directed a movie call "Salute" (2008) which recounts the events from his uncle's POV. It's been 2 years.... but I'll try and source and post a link to that interview.

  • Yes Peter Norman. He did not have to do anything yet he stuck out for what was right and suffered a great injustice for it for much of his life. RIP mate

  • @NZTULIPS55 Mate, they did not just do it for Americans. They did it for human kind.

If humans did not wake up and see the truth these guys would have been made villains for ever.

They made us wake up and see the truth.

  • on a side note: the host would get it...on the real side, this is a great show.

  • My Coach and Hero!! I had the honor and pleasure working with Dr Smith in my early college years...He is a Hero and a half.

  • great video! "...faith...hopes and dreams free from any charred ideals of, 'I did it myself'"...OH MY GOD! WHAT!...MY GOD IN HEAVEN! ...that's powerful...

  • White people didn't do that either, it was their own people. So. Their own people did it for weapons. Wow that sure is great.

ophGR, I suggest you do, Asshole. Plus History books lie ;)

    Just like the bible.

  • Well maybe thats because blacks didn't enslave whites and brought litteraly shiploads of them to a different country... (Non)Violent suppression by an opposite race is bound to provoke (non)violent retaliation, this is just a small nonviolent example... of that..
