Written for the early electronic instrument, the Ondes Martenot (above), Olivier Messiaen's "Oriason" is a beautifully mellow and plaintive piece of music. The Ondes Martenot is a close relation of the theremin, and like the theremin was frequently used (and abused) on sci-fi film and tv soundtracks throughout the 40's, 50's and 60's, but also gained a foothold in many "serious" orchestras. I first heard "Oriason" on the box set "Ohm;The Early Gurus of Electronic Music", as recorded by Ensemble d'Ondes de Montreal.

  • Whoa! Thanks for the correction (and sorry for my poor inglish), you know, i really don´t know the look of a 30´s Martenot! If you write "Messiaen oraison" on google...just take the first option! xDDD. So, i discover the song from a book about electronic music; "Techno rebelde" (Aryel kyrou). I don´t know if exist a inglish version, but highly recommended!!!

  • A fine performance of a truly beautiful piece of music. Thanks for posting it. It is perhaps important to point out, however, that the instrument in the photo is not the same type of instrument that the piece is being played on, nor is it the instrument for which the composition was written. The photo (taken in 1928) shows one of Maurice Martenots first "jeu a distance" prototypes for what eventually became the keyboard/ribbon pitch control instrument we know today as the ondes martenot.

  • this was to be the 5th movement of his quartet for the end of time. and alos used as thewater at its higest tide in another work

  • Wow... a remarkably beautiful fragile and haunting piece of music

  • wow

  • @copperleaves Hi, I thought this piece was written for an ensemble of ondes martenots. Can you please elaborate? Thanks.

  • @fearofclowns1989 It is good.

  • @Farcallo Just because something's old doesn't mean it's not good. Do you think musicians only learned how to make good music in the past 20 years or so?

  • just beautiful

  • Its old, but ist pretty relaxing, though.

  • that was really nice XD
