This is a playthrough of Tuff E Nuff, Jaleco's Streetfighter II wannabe from 1993 (known by the far cooler name of "Dead Dance" in Japan).

As far as one-on-one beat 'em ups for the SNES go, you essentially have the Streetfighter series, the Mortal Kombat series, and a whole bucketload of also-rans. Tuff E Nuff is one of the also-rans, but easily one of the better ones. It borrows shamelessly from Streetfighter, but the gritty post-apocalyptic setting, impressive soundtrack and generally high level of polish lift it some way above the average.

This playthrough is on the default "normal" difficulty level, which isn't *especially* challenging. The CPU is pretty open to well-timed strong aerial kicks and strong sweeps and can be knocked out of the air fairly easily with high kicks and uppercuts. I lose a couple of rounds against K's (because I went to pieces) and final-boss Jade (because he's cheap as hell) but other than that everything was pretty straightforward.

This section of the playthrough covers the fights against the ridiculously-named Vortz, Kotono, Syoh, Beans, Dolf and Rei. Enjoy!

  • The more I listen to this game's soundtrack, the more I love it. Check out 3:00, 7:00 and 11:03 for particularly awesome examples.

  • street fighter 2 is the bigboss of the early 90s beatem'ups. all the other games seemed to be poor imitations, At least until neogeo brought out the likes of kof and the fatalfuries

  • 9:20

Zazi blocks a rocket using only his manly biceps. Love it.

  • I bought this game at an anime convention for 3 dollars, not knowing anything about it. I'm now glad to see my money was well spent.

  • I loved this game. I played as Kotono more than any other character.

  • Japanese version "Dead Dance" is better because there is blood on face.

  • Then again I was a button masher xD had no skill at all. Just wanted to get to the end.

  • AHA! I remember Beans he made me rage SOOOOO MUCH

  • I love that as you progress up the tower, your special attacks became more detailed! This is one of those games I would scoop up if it ever made it to the VC.

  • @loverboysai On the main menu screen pressing left x 3, right x 3, left x 7, start will unlock the bosses for single player. For two player, you have to put in the last code (without pressing start at the end), then press right x 3, left x 3, right x 7, start.
