From the DVD "A Tribute to Fly Tying" from www.sportingfly.com Dave Long interviews Al Troth, the inventor of the "Elk-Hair Caddis" fly, and Al's son Eric. Al is a true pioneer in the world of fly fishing.
Such a phenomenal stalwart, tireless enthusiast and one-of-a-kind contributor. Spent time with him in the early '70's. He (we) would stay up till 1:00 - 2:00 in the morning talking endlessly and knocking out ties as he spoke. Wonderfully possessed as it were, so viscerally studious and knowledgeable.
I'm new to fly fishing and will attempt to tie my first Elk Hair Caddis tomorrow. Thank you so much for your contributions to the fly fishing world Mr. Al Troth!
Great to see these two legends here. Thank you so much for your contributions. I too wish I were Al's son, what a great teacher to have! Thank you for posting this video.

who is Lee Wulff and why has he got 3 surnames? I've never heard of an Elk Hair caddis and I'm sure not many people have. Anyway, I have invented a fly which people wont leave home without. Forget your Moose Hair Gonad or whatever that fly you mentioned was. I have Cockbreath's Gnat. It is a 2 foot long beaver tail with a 6 ounze pyramid surf sinker bound to it with bright orange lead wire. So far I have killed 16 fish using this method. Unfortunately I am now banned from the local aquarium.
Just tied a few elk hair caddis. Just wanted to compare them with the best. Thank you for the great video.

Al Troth is probably the most under-appreciated legend of our sport. Thanks a ton for posting.

I tyed thes up a few years ago and all ways have 10 to 12 of them in diff color. Because if you have rizing fish you can NOT beat a elak hair caddis.

The camera man or question asker sounds like Kermit the frog. Al Troth created some awesome flies.
