@GreenDistantStar... i say hit down on the ball, so does tiger, so does jack, and so does ernie. is that enough for you? seriously though, i get good results when i hit down, bad results when i don't. i'll take the good results no matter who the hell says otherwise.

The Director of golf @ Troon says hit down on the ball, Don Trahern the 'swing doctor' says don't. Almost every golf tip is contradicted by another. Who do we listen to? Gawd golf is a confusiing game!

What I haven't seen in these comments is his advise to take a wide swing back and through. I think this is key - more so than the divot.

@tarkstar99 uh... definitely a divot especially after the last one... you might want to actually watch the video and observe things before commenting on them... as deep as a short iron... no... I take divots with my fairway woods... I get super impressed by that stuff.

eerr? i didn't see any divots in either of those shots???
I saw a slight grazing of the grass , am i missing something?

I know a local hall of fame golfer that keeps the handle/grip of the club behind the ball at all times and absolutely picks the ball clean with a nice soft draw every time. He hardly brushes the grass. He is so consistent that it amazes me. He doesn't believe in taking divots with any "long" clubs which includes irons. He only starts to take a slightly noticeable divot with his mid irons. Harvey Penick didn't like to see divots at all. I guess this is just another school of thought.

I agree with warwolfii. I basically avoid golf tips on the internet and in magazines etc. They often contradict each other and may not be right for me. I tend to focus on the basic. I also think people need to work on one thing at the time until theyve mastered it rather than trying out 4 or 5 different tips at once. My advice would be for people to learn to understand their own swings instead of trying every tip they stumble across.

I saw a video (in youtube) of Ben Hogan hitting a fairway shot with a # 4 fairway wood. He hit the ball with a divot.
I've been watching a lot of these golf videos lately and I must say that they'll confuse the crap out of you. One guy says "swing down, take a divot," the next guy says "skip the club along the ground." Any beginner watching these videos would be so confused he'd probably give up the game.
