@grybold Where I live in SC the mockers chase all the other bidrs away that compete with them for insects. Robins, Bluejays and especially Bluebirds. The main time of the year they do this is before and during nesting season. (Feb-April)

The mockingbirds in my area (Southern California) do not harass smaller, non-predatory birds, but when the crows come around, the mockingbirds are quick to harass them and chase them out. We like the mockingbirds around here because they do not bother the birds that are small and harmless but the mockingbirds chase the crows away. We welcome the mockingbirds. An owl ... that's a whole different ball game, like hawk or eagle. It's like a hyena harassing a tiger. Be careful !

Not really...
Mockingbirds are simply quite territorial.
The Mockingbirds around my place attack...everything.
They attack Cats, Dogs, Cars...People.
Whatever is in "their" territory is fair game.
And Owls usually go after juicy rodents, lizards, turtles...even Rabbits.
I think an Owl would have to be starving before it went after a Mockingbird's young.

great video! most likely, the owl had eaten the mockingbird's child. It's not unusual for crows, and jays to hassle owls, but mockingbirds usually on chase and attack if a bird has plundered their babies.
