Iron can be carburized and turned into steel, which was widely employed by early medieval smiths and known since Antiquity.

Hammering the bloom up to 40 times, then repeatedly folding the solid piece until carbon is well distributed and impurities burned out. ... I'd know who to hell came up with the idea only Japanese perfected this technique? Those "ignorant western barbarians" figured out how to make their own katAnas before the japanese sword was even developed!
