Also referring to the comment I made below, Waimea Bay doesn't break tall,its the overall mass,thickness and girth that makes it huge.Back to this incredible wave.I've been caught on three different occasions by these kind of waves.There was one that I would have to call bigger,it was in Nov.1996.We saw it coming from miles away,it looked like a huge tsunami feathering two miles out.We paddled 150 yards out ,it broke 20 ft in front of me,top to bottom all the way across.We estimated 80 ft face

I've been surfing the Northshore since 1969, a 20ft. wave doesn't necessarily have a 40ft. face.Hawaiian scale was an under exaggeration of what our pioneers figured the size of a wave was.We know what a 8 ft. wave looks like and what a 20 footer looks like.That wave is two twenty footers stacked on top of each other.If you really count the ft. or inches of a 20 footer at the bay,you will find very little people have ever caught a 40 ft. face.
