  • i have the same question.

are sherline's machine good? im thinking to get one but im not sure.

i would like to know your opinion.

  • For the price, it is good.

I have two problems with it, backlash and rigidity. I am always futzing with the backlash. It is difficult to adjust.

Also, when milling anything other then Delrin, the machine will flex. It is not rigid at all. I was thinking of getting a Taig.

  • A few ideas for reducing flex: 1. Move the part so the area you're cutting is supported by the mill table. 2. Try to use shorter endmills and holders, only hanging the cutter 'way out there when you need to reach into a deep hole with it. 3. When using a model 2000 Sherline, avoid extending the column arm more than needed. 4. Take advantage of a CNC mill's repeatability; write your programs to cut a part in many small passes instead of one big cut at full-depth.

  • Yes, all those suggestions will help, but the Sherline is just lacking in rigidity. It is understandable, given the aluminum construction of the machine. It is the trade-off for light-weight and portability.

  • @microsteppingcnc

    is that plastic?

  • @molinobeer Delrin is wonderful kind of plastic. Machines like butter. Well, even better then butter. The only problem with Delrin is the price--it isn't cheap. Delrin is a Dupont trademark, the generic name is Acetal.

  • ok. your opinion. why? you can't just say "sherlines suck" without giving a reason why... your statement serves no purpose in the world other than static. educate yourself before ever conveying some type of information be it visual or audible...
