I cannot recall the last time I was so impressed by the visual style (cinematography, editing, lighting) of a film. Yes, it is style over substance and it has a silliness to it that you usually get when you watch an experimental pop-art Japanese cartoon. However, if you accept the fact that that silliness is intentional in order to tell the story from the point of view of a child, then you understand why the story is so manic, melodramatic and anarchaic.
