Couldn't go faster due to traffic. I am still hoping for a day I can max my B10. It's pushing hard to 300. As you can see, it revs 5500 rpm. The B10 redlines at 6700, so there is def. more. I am looking forward to a day without traffic to check what the B10 is capable of. I ll bring a GPS for accurate speed. 270 km/h is GPS 262 km/h (168mph vs. 164 mph)

  • But there are 2 things, what I like on the M5 - manual gerabox and LSD - the things you need for some "dirty things" especially on curvy mountain roads, that's maybe unresistable arguments by buying the car in this class!

  • this is also something I do actually miss sometimes, I have to admit, but as you know the B10 features the steering wheel up / downshift button, and they work also quite nice....

  • also be careful with the S version: the engine is more sensitive, the brakes are better but also a lot more expensive... compared to the "normal" B10, it's almost not worth it. And also compared to an M5, the difference is so little, acceleration 0-200 is only a glance...

  • don't forget that the alpinas usually have a bit more power then in the specs. the engine disperse often up. I don't want to brag, but I actually managed to get it to 310 on the speedometer, but it took hell of a way to get there, miles of empty autobahn... I assume that it was probably somthing like real 290s.. I measured the once the aberration from the analog speedometer to an external navigation system and it's about 10 - 15 km/h depending on speed...

  • well, mate

bahnstormero your such called dirty things? i can tell you, that if u turn off the esp in the alpina and click it into sports mode u can go sideways backwards and both at the same time :D no doubt about that.

  • My Alpina's B10 V8 real speed was 275 GPS when the speedometer hit 300

  • My father has a X5 4.6 and I almost never used the manual function - it upshifts automatically at max. rpm - doesn't matter which position is currently used. Merc's gearboxes allow you to run the engine to the rev limiter - with typical noise, as if you have a proper manual box.

I'm neither against nor for manual gearbox, but it makes a driving experience even more intensive.

  • Thanks for your advises! I actually own a CLK55 and it's very hard to push the needle up to "300", you need at least a sloping road and a following wind)) I've just heard about the unreliability of M5 E39, so I thought the B10S would be the right choice)

  • This engine sounds wonderfull - even inside the car at higher speeds, in this aspect b10 is better, than a E55 W210. I doubt though, it's capable to manage 300 on the speedo, there's just not enough power to do it. I'm thinking about to buy the "S" version as a sedan - must be a bit faster)))
