This was suggested as an idea for a contest. I didn't feel as though I had enough videos for a contest. But I was immediately taken with the idea of this selection, "La vergine" from La Forza. This has always been one of my favorite moments in the opera, such a beautiful piece of music. I hope everyone enjoys:
Barbara Frittoli - 2008
Leontyne Price - 1984
Anna Tomowa-Sintow - 1981
Maria Chiara - 1990
Nina Stemme - 2008
Sharon Sweet - 1996
Ghena Dimitrova - 1991
Georgina Lukacs - 1999
Michele Crider - 1996
Giovanna Casolla - 1992
Montserrat Caballé - 1978
Renata Tebaldi - 1958

  • Comparing great singers is like trying to count grains of sand....useless and without any purpose.MANY singers can be excellent in their own way. Many more will be in the future....Don't waste time looking for better or worse, just enjoy what you listen to.Most times is better than pure silence....

  • @pourmoinyc Truer words have never been said, thank you!

  • Dear Coloratureafan, it's really funny to compare, but the term of "contest" is anyway very ennoying. Art is NOT a competition! And critics as her high c is better than x's high c are totally stupid. A role, a performance cannot be judged by 3 minutes of music....

  • wotansings,

Yes, I know the drill. Everyone hates the word contest. I don't think anyone ever really considered my "contests" a true contest in that respect. They were just a fun way to compare singers. Anyway, this video was not and is not a part of my "contests" so I am wondering why your comment in on this video?

  • Coloraturafan, you have impeccable taste! I finally got this on DVD....the entire performance is stellar; even Oralia Dominguez is wonderful. Tebaldi--sublime! All Tebaldi lovers must get the DVD: She and Corelli are as gorgeous as their voices. It made clear just how diminished is the operatic age in which we live. Although, I did recently see Karita Mattila as Salome at the Met and she was wonderful....but alas, we have no one close to Tebaldi. If I babble, it's because Tebaldi makes me!

  • Tebaldi had an absolute vocal prime of 18 years between 1944/1962 and she went back in 1964 singing 12 years more, her singing remained easy and technically very well fited, as always because of her solid technique

  • The late Giuseppe Di Stefano said of this aria, after Leyla Gencer's performance, that it was a like a telephone call from God to Verdi.

  • Exquisitely beautiful. Brava!

  • SUBLIME !!!

  • @pourmoinyc Dear pourmoinyc: Don't worry if some people on youtube toss insults my way. I have to admit that I am childish enough to enjoy provoking people who have "the conventional" taste and have forgotten the great artists of the past. Lebewohl! VivaRenata

  • @pourmoinyc I'm sorry, I get so emotional. Yes, I had an angel sitting by my side and I still do. She was a truly good person who communicated the love of God to those of us on earth. Min älskade Renata! (Had to say it in my native language, Swedish - my beloved Renata).

  • @pourmoinyc "Tarda è la notte ...." but I have to say, Renata Tebaldi has been an inspiration for me in all aspects of my life. And that daughter - she is strong, healthy and thriving and now almost 23 yrs. old. She is going to be a linguist and teacher of languages, with Italian as her specialty. I heard the Vergine degli Angeli for the first time when I thought it was all going to end badly, but I now know that Renata was praying for us both. Thank you for understanding!

  • @VivaRenata Your words are like gold!!.But remember that to blab is the specialty of idiots...They just like to hear their own voices and erroneous critiques. Most of "them" can't see the forest because of the trees...Yes...VIVA RENATA!!!

  • @VivaRenata BRAVA!!! I bet you had an angel sitting by your side when that amazing limpid, pure and bell like voice soothed your pain.I'm also sure you had a cherub of a daughter inspired by the purest most powerful of all the arts:THE HUMAN VOICE!!.I agree 100% with you,Mme. Tebaldi made our lives fuller and more beautiful with her amazing gift of bewitching singing. For sure even God Himself rejoiced of His creation of an amazing singer. She will live forever in our hearts and minds.BRAVA!!!

  • @coloraturafan Very welcome!.Most times I feel like shouting "Shut up and listen stupid!".Everybody likes to sound like an expert of exquisite impeccable taste judging others while themselves are unable to sing their way out of a paper bag. They forget it is not the destination but the journey getting there that matters.Every singer started as a unknown mediocre artist. God bless the few that get to be great because they never heard these critics or they would still be one of the unknown ones
