You are my savior. I am doing an essay for a film class about these two scenes. And, yes, I agree. Shop Around the Corner is timeless. There's something about James Stewart that's missing in Tom Hanks.

@anikaeggenhofer gr8 Thank U ....well Tom Hanks is Tom Hanks & Jimmy was the gr8est star of the 20th century...its unfair to compare the actors of different era ...& abt this role Jimmy's character was of a soft spoken man & Tom's character was sort arrogant wealthy businessman but i felt Tom & Meg Ryan both looked charming...& plz do let me know abt your essay on this scene ...

Well, I have to admit the older movie has been a favorite for many years--and if you really can get past it's age, I still think that the scene from "You've Got Mail" is but an imitation of the real deal. I wonder if 70 years from now, people will remember it.

@anikaeggenhofer THAT IS VERY TRUE ! don't get me wrong I like Tom Hanks but Jimmy Stewart blows him away as the everyman. I have shop around the corner and love it. Just because something is old doesn't mean it's not great. The old film is breazier, quirkier and more charming. Jimmy Stewart losing his job during the height of the Great Depression was a lot more serious than Meg Ryan losing her mother's bookshop to a conglomerate. I mean hey jobs were hard to find then.

I wanted to see "The Shop Around The Corner" after seeing it on a "Top 10 Chick Flicks" video but couldn't find it here on YouTube. I found this video instead and I think I'll see it once more. I've seen "You've Got Mail" 30 times or more.

@ilovemyschnauzer1 i know he's successful and talented and a great actor, but in my opinion, putting him next to jimmy stewart just makes him look pathetic in this particular scene. Usually i like a movie with tom hanks. But jimmy stewarts just on another level and comparing them side by side just makes tom hanks look awful.

@ugottheblues And tom hanks is a legend!! He's won 2 oscars. He's been nominated for 5. He has been in a ton of extremely successful movies. He is widely considered to be one of the best actors. He is considered to be one of the most flexible actors ever, starring in dramas and comedies to perfection. He is one of the highest paid actors ever and on top of that, he is a very successful producer and has won awards from movies that he has produced. If that isn't a legend, then I don't know what is

@ugottheblues Hanks did an amazing job in you've got mail. I agree that jimmy stewart is one of the most talented actors, but Tom was extremely funny and I think that you've got mail is one of the best movies ever.
