Splinter was a rat and always be a rat. the cartoon is not the original story its altered for kids

Yoshi killed Nagi that tried to kill tang Shen, Yoshi's love. Yoshi and shen ran to NY. Nagi's kid brother Saki swore vengance and years after he became the best ninja of the foot and was allowed to make a new branch of Foot in NY. Saki tracked down Yoshi and Shen, killed both. Splinter got mutated with the turtles by a freak accident. Splinter trained the turtles to kill Saki, which they did.
