This is absolutely awful singing.

@jmccracken1963 When on earth is he singing flat? I'm serious!
-
I saw him with Giacomini in 1977 in Don Carlo. Scotto. Horne Ghiaurov at the Met. He was alright. I saw him a few years latter in florida as Columba in Cristofero Columba by Franchetti he was shot by then.

Wow, Don Carlo is one of Verdi's most mature operas. A duet with two basses, and then you have this beautiful aria. Unfortunately this is from 1980, when Milnes' vocal decline began.

Really, the decline began in earnest late in 1981, after the throat doctors screwed up his surgery. This isn't BAD, but there is too much flatting by Milnes. Those who say that "it goes with the territory" for Verdi baritones are WRONG: Warren didn't flat like that, and neither Gobbi, nor Bastianini, nor MacNeil, nor Merrill did so in this role. Even in 1972, Merrill was still singing well and ON PITCH as Rodrigue.
