we purposely replace the power filters in a traynor amp with lower MFD value items to make the amp more spongy and distorted.
To answer the question ... what does lowering the filtering sound like?
The amp is filtered like a tweed deluxe and surprise now has that sound.

  • Now that is sweet tone! I have a question, you say the smaller filter caps restrict the wattage. Do you mean they loose voltage a bit like a sag resistor(resistance in the power supply)? Or is it a steady lower voltage to begin with? Cheers

  • @TheAndyroid the smaller filtercaps sag faster ...to say they restrict the wattage is not accurate ... perhaps its better to say they focus the EQ on the good guitar (mid) frequencies and reduce the amplification of ultra low and high frequencies that interfere with the distortion note we are looking to shape..

  • Any advice on my speaker ohm question?

  • @fuzzfreak1967 a 16ohm speaker should read low on a meter set the amp to match the cab as its marked

  • I have a couple more questions maybe you could answer. Speaker ohms, I measured the ohms on my 16 ohm marshall cab & my meter read 13 ohms at the cord end. Should I set the amp to the 8 ohm setting because its safer to have higher speaker ohms than transformer output or is it ok to have the amp on the 16 ohm setting?

  • that's a 16 ohm impedance ... your meter is measuring resistance

Impedance is related but does not measure exactly the same

  • Thanks patfurlan, I was afraid the transformer was going bad

  • replace all three pre amp tubes with new ones ... I really like the new Tungsol 12ax7...

probably only one is bad but all three will make sure

  • I also have a 1970 100 watt superlead. It has this hiss sound that sounds like the wind blowing. It did not have this problem when I first got it. Took it to a local repair guy, He changed a pre amp tube (middle tube) The amp was fine for about 6 hours & then it started again. He says the transformer in the amp is supper beafy and new tubes cannot handle this. He gave me some old tubes to try but they do not work either. Any ideas or thoughts on this situation? thank you

  • nice awesome. maybe you can fix my v32 palamino?
