I took Israel Kamakawiwoʻole's arrangement as a starting point for this cover. His version adds a beautiful, melancholy edge to the song. I don't think anybody's voice can match Iz's on this song - but I sing better with my fingers than my voice, anyway. So I came up with a folk fingerstyle arrangement on guitar that incorporates the melody and much of the phrasing of Iz's version. And, to pay homage to him, I made it a duet with ukulele.

The guitar is my beautiful new Webber Roundbody which arrived three days ago from the luthier himself. The ukulele is an Oscar Schmidt baritone converted to standard C6 (GCEA) tuning strung with the C6 Aquila baritone strings and a D'Addario wound G 4th string. This is my first outing on the ukulele - I only picked one up for the first time a couple of months ago. They're charming little instruments. This won't be the last time you see me playing one.

I'd also like to thank all my subscribers for being patient with me - the past year+ has been hectic and I haven't been able to record as much as I'd like. I'm vowing to turn over a new leaf for 2012 and hope to be recording more and doing some collaborations as well.

  • Beautiful. It would be great to incorporate his Wonderful World, too.

  • Gorgeous playing and gorgeous arrangement! I'm really enjoying your videos.

From a mixing standpoint, I find the recordings a bit bright/harsh. A lot of upper mids/low highs. Probably partly a function of the mics you're recording into (I know the SP B1 can be a bit brittle), and something to watch out for.

    Nice work all around.
