South Koreans are bidding a fond farewell to former president Kim Dae-jung, who passed away after a cardiac arrest on Tuesday. Hundreds came to pay homage to the former political prisoner, once sentenced to death by the Souths former military regime, but beat the odds and rose to the top.
South Koreans on Wednesday grieved the loss of former President Kim Dae-jung at an altar in the capital Seoul.
Kim died on Tuesday of a cardiac arrest at the age of 85.
Hundreds of mourners lined up to offer flowers and pay their final respects.
[Kim Hee-young, Mourner]:
"For Koreans, this year has been tragic. We've lost Cardinal Kim Su-Hwan and former president Roh Mu-Hyun lately, and now we lost Kim Dae-Jung. I think this is very sad for us."
[Kim Chung-o, Mourner]:
"I'm speechless. It's like the sky has fallen. My hope is destroyed and I feel my heart is hollow."
The former political prisoner, once sentenced to death under one of South Korea's early military rulers, was elected president in December 1997 on his fourth attempt.
An extraordinary figure in South Korea's shift to democracy, he won the Nobel Peace Prize for his attempts to reconcile with the prickly North.
Park Ji-won, an aide to the late South Korean president, said on Wednesday that the North would send a delegation to the South to pay its respects.
The five-member delegation may arrive ahead of the funeral, expected to be held in about a week in Seoul.
The South's unification ministry also confirmed that North Korean leader Kim Jong-il had delivered a condolence message.
As South Koreans grieved, current Prime Minister Han Seung-soo and former president Chun Doo-hwan, the man who had sentenced him to death, visited Kim's altar at the hospital.
[Han Seung-soo, South Korean Prime Minister]:
He was a great leader in South Korea. We will remember his achievements for a long time. We will conduct his funeral service with respect and regard.
Analysts said Kim's death may help improve ties between the Koreas, which have soured since President Lee Myung-bak took power as Seoul cut off a steady flow of aid sent since the 2000 summit.
