Japan is being uplifted by the ongoing subduction of the Pacific Plate, and is still being built by occasional volcanic activity. If your idea were true that area you are panicking about would already be sinking. Its not. The quake activity is also in line with predictions for a mag 9 quake and is expected to keep activity above average for up to 10 years.

Are you saying these so called lava tubes have somehow held encapsulated air , for some great deal of time, to suddenly start expelling it in place of water?

@Zach97Attack Or educate you instead perhaps. Honshu and Hokkaido and Kyushu, If I remember correctly without googling it, are some of the islands in the nation of Japan which is comprised of more than one island.
-
@utuberine ummmm....sir, Japan IS an island. Get educated.

Grow up kid.
This guy doesn't know anything about geology. The earthquakes are caused by plate tectonics, not by some hypothetical empty volcanic tunnels being filled with water (the tunnels are not empty).
Japan is located on the edge of four tectonic plates: the Eurasian, Filipino, Pacific and North American plates. When the Pacific plate is subducted under the three other plates, this giant movement causes the earth to shake - earthquakes.
