Palghat T. S. Mani Iyer plays a percussion solo (tani avartanam) on the mridangam, a South Indian double-headed barrel-shaped drum.

An audio clip of Mani Iyer playing the mridangam is among the Sounds of the Earth on the gold records aboard the Voyager spacecrafts:

  • @pisthall he is just trying to illustrate that PMI's genius is great enough to be recognized by the entire world.

  • Voyager Spacecraft? Not that Mani Iyer vaaL would have denounced any new technology especially when it honours him. But can't you think of other great quotes about this son of Palghat soil, without thinking like an average Indian immigrant of USA, inwit?

But thanks for posting this great Alathur video exemplifying the combined geniuses of these greatest artists (Lalgudi sir is quite at home too!).

  • dont know much about mridangam but i know what i like

  • What an artist. Execution, control on laya, expression and command. Glad I'm finally discovering him. Haha ... amazing. Keeping count w/ him is a joy.

  • He is one of the greatest! thanks for sharing...

  • I remember both Palghat Mani Iyer and the Umayalpuram Sivaraman, brings back my early days both are excellent!

  • This is very beautiful playing! I simply love hearing palghat and palani master play. truly there will never be any miruthangist that shall outmatch these maestros

  • Can more or less see where UKS & PR got their magnificent strokes from :)

  • Great. What a pity we have so few videos of these all-time greats.
