thank you for sharing this very important footage of a extremely important moment in the history and progression of martial arts competition. please. as you watch this keep in mind it was 1951, and Mr. Gracie was still developing his personal approach to his art. to undermine the impact the Gracie family has had, whether you are a fan of the art or not, is just revisionist history in my opinion. respect should always be shown to the pioneers and the elders even as the art advances to new levels.

@TheStudentofthegame To correct that statement, I would say that's generally the problem with 'sport' Judo. Depending where you learn, and what type of Judo you learn, there are different reactions committed to muscle memory. I for example am never taught to give up my back and have tapped a much larger opponent from my back (the vid is on my channel). There are certain habits to avoid with any art, and true, combination is the best idea.

Hello, Helio did not "win" this one. Kimura bragged that if Gracie lasted more than a few minutes, Kimura would declare Gracie the champion. Kimura tossed Gracie for over and hour, and Kimura finally summited him with the hold that is now known as the Kimura. However, Kimura had much respect for Gracie and told Gracie that he had discovered techniques banned by the Kodokan.
That story was stated by Helio himself.

@onokaoonokao One of the things looked for in a bout is which one of the martial art styles is clearly superior to the other. For instance Iron Palm vs. Judo. Ot Ninjitsu vs. Judo. Judo & Ju-Jitsu (ie. BJJ) have shown themselves to be pretty equal among experienced practitioners. Martial artists are always trying to determine which is the superior style - as they always want to practice in the best style.

@TheStudentofthegame yes I agree, their is less focus on newaza compared to bjj or jj, I don't train for sport but self-defense, the reason that kano focuses more on nage-waza, is because in a real fight, if you throw someone on the hard ground (concrete or even earth) they most likely won't get up, all fights start standing up, in mma you see alot of takedowns & you can get away with it because the ground is padded & you can't knee or 12-6 elbow someone.

@MUEEN007 out of experience the only problem judo has is a lack of knowledge when on the back,as they dont train it for competition purposes. a friend of mine is a black belt and i tapped him all day long, but once he started to not "give" me his back, it was a whole different kettle of fish. Combining arts is best as proven by mma.

Judo and Jiu Jitsu are almost the same thing.

Look at his bloody legs, they look like tree trunks! The gracies say that kimura won because he was alot heavier & inaccurately say he was 80lbs heavier & 9yrs younger which is bullshit, to those that know about kimura, he was 4yrs younger and 10lbs heavier, his usually weight was around 85kg. Judo is a more effective self defense art, whereas BJJ is a more effective sport art especially for mma.

@dortiz1514 Hello I'm not a trying to be mean, but but you sound really uneducated in martial arts. Because it's the fighter not the art when it comes to grappling. I do Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu I even can say the name of my academy :) Alliance AZO look it up.I do not think you have ever stepped on a mat in your life. If you have and I quote " i beaten a black belt in judo in the standup and i tap him out(im the one who swept him)" then you have these a gym, coach, and a rank name them? :D

what are you people talking about, there is no best martial art, helio lost because this guy was a freaking beast and trained throws against fucking tree trunks. Only way you could compare styles trully would be if you cloned a guy, made them study different martial arts and then have them fight 100 battles to see who will win more times. ffs
