The Tel Aviv Beach came to Central Park in NYC for one day on Sunday, June 21, 2009.
The special event was part of the Tel Aviv-Yafo Centennial Celebrations that are taking place in Israel and select cities in other countries.
The beach had enough sand for lots of kids to play in, and the adults were able to relax on lawn chairs, listen to music, and negotiate their way through the Sunday NY Times or another local paper (a clear reminder that they were still in NY).
As for the water, there were no oceans in site, but rain did arrive later in the afternoon, clearing the large sandbox, except for those few beach goers who were happy enough to remain under their umbrella, or even without one to protect them. Soon the sun returned again and so did the onlookers, some from Tel Aviv or nearby, and many who'd probably never get there.
The film misses the Israeli musical acts that took place before I arrived at the beach, but if you like sand and are curious what the beach looked like, grab a lawn chair - or any piece of furniture - and enjoy.
