Baguazhang Spontaneous Form and Application

This is a small demo of Jiulong Baguazhang zifa wudao (九龍自發舞蹈) nine dragons spontaneously dancing form. This is not a memorized martial form; it is an expression of feeling and energy similar to the Yiquan health dance concept. The spontaneous form flows out of the unconscious like a big dragon sailing lazily in the sky as one imagines weaving and dodging a series of attacks from two or more opponents.

The application portion of this demo is an unrehearsed attack by two opponents, Bagua instructors Yancy Orchard and Rick Krausman. The only instructions given them were for them to attempt to grab and hold Dr. Painter if possible.

This demonstration was filmed at the masters demonstration at A Taste of China in Winchester Virginia in 2006.

  • does bagua use a prefighting posture? or on gaurd stance.

  • @alopda1 Dear Sir, This depends on the system of Baguazhang, some do some do not. In the Jiulong Baguazhang system we do not have a specific guard stance. We learn to use a principle called "tThe Wedge" wit any of the palm formations to allow the arms to act as a shield that allows attacks to slide off easily. Thanks for your question.

  • I don't even attest to being that good at bagua (just really enjoy the style) and was training with four of my kenpo brothers in the same manner, and I was able to prevent them from controlling my movement and also constantly brought them to the ground without losing my own balance. Thanks for the videos.

  • Dear @TaoistSoldier,No you do not just walk into them. The body momentum helps supply a large part of the kinetic force. Palms can push, grab or strike. There is arm movement in a strike it just has to be timed so that all of the body force (kinetic energy) arrives on the target at the same time. This creates a whole body power strike that is very, very strong. Timing, speed and correct angles are very important. Thank You John Painter

  • Ive been thinking of combing the movements and foot work with Wing Chun... do you think that would work well together?

  • Very nice. So I have a question. Are the 8 palms and their derivatives utilized as strikes, or do you short of just walk into the opponents with them using your whole body? I feel like its more of the latter, that you initially sort of just walk into them rather then striking them with the palms, and then you follow up with qinna, etc. Am I right?

  • very good. You always demonstrate your effective art with humour and compassion. How refreshing to have someone demonstrating the spirit AND the practicality of bagua zhang. Best of luck to you in your training and your teaching.

    Damien.

  • To Shifu Painter,

Thank You for the Demo !

  • Thats one for my favourites thanks for the great video
