French Astronomer Charles Messier was a comet hunter. He made a list of all the objects he noticed that
resembled, but were not, comets. This list became known as the Messier Catalogue. Originally published
in 1771, it listed just 45 objects. It has been expanded over time and now lists 110 astronomical objects.
The objects listed in the Messier Catalogue prove themselves highly popular with amateur astronomers
due to being relatively easy to locate and observe.
