Just uploading my progress on the three jigs (Irish Washerwoman, Swallowtail, Kesh) I've bothered to learn on the 5-string. A few mistakes, but OK nonetheless. I need to pick up a tenor sometime...

  • no need for a tenor lad that is savage. how long did it take to learn the first one?

  • @78theram Washerwoman I'd been playing for about two weeks by that point. Funny thing is, I've moved over to the mandolin (easier to play medieval music on, I feel) and haven't learned Washerwoman on it yet! In fact, out of the three, the only one I play on mando is Swallowtail.

  • The first banjos brought to Ireland were 5 string in the 1840's. Check out some of Tommy Makem's old videos or Tom Hanway's newer music. Great stuff.

  • i didnt think it did either, until i heard a friend of mine, seanie smullen playing irish trad tunes on it,he plays both 5 string and tenor,he makes it look so easy

  • cool, im learning these songs on the violin!

  • Not bad but like I've said, I don't think the 5-string suits Irish tunes. Pick up a tenor mate if you wanna stick with the irish.

  • that's my jig-man! ;)
