Universal Draft Presents FS Earl Thomas of the Texas Longhorns

Earl Thomas is a very interesting first round prospect. He has many teams divided into love/hate factions. He looks small on tape, and does not look very comfortable dealing with traffic or making solid run support tackles in a crowd. He is better in the open field, but still prone to missing or falling off bigger, more physical players. For some teams, this is a deal breaker. Other teams don't mind, because when you watch how he plays the combination of the QB's eyes, the receiver routes, and the ball in the air, he is lightyears ahead of most college safety prospects and has the kind of speed to make a lot of plays at the next level. They say the smaller you are the faster you need to be, and Earl Thomas is very fast. There is some thought to the theory that you can teach the guy to be a better and more consistent tackler, but you can't necessarily teach a guy to read three keys in a split second and adjust on the move with urgency and burst. And of course, you can't teach speed.
