A Chesterfield man born in Hampton has been killed in Iraq.

The Dept. of Defense says Sgt. Jeffrey A. Reed, 23, died March 2 after being wounded when his vehicle was struck by a grenade in Taji, Iraq. He was assigned to the 411th Military Police Company, 720th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas.

Reed, who was married, was a 2004 graduate of Lloyd C. Bird High School in Chesterfield. The sergeant is survived by his wife, mother, father, sister and a brother - who is a chemical weapons specialist serving in Afghanistan.

  • You don't know me but I have a connection to Sgt. Reed. It has been over three years since my tour in Iraq ended and there is not a day that goes by that I don't think of him. See, I was the lead medic on the table when he came to our clinic on Camp Taji. I am with the 28th Inf. Div. PANG 56th SBCT. I'm also a civilian paramedic who reenlisted to take my civilian skills to the battlefield.

I want to express my condolences to the family and say I'm sorry, I tried.
