Three types of palm fruit that are the wild foods of macaws and cockatoos with information where to buy this fruit for your parrot, cockatoo or macaw.
I am pleased to be able to offer offering these natural wild foods to you for your birds to reunite with their wild past. These are the exact foods that your macaws' and cockatoos' bills, feet and minds are programmed to use.
These are colorful fruits of the Fox tail palm (Woodyea bifurcata)
The fruits turn a deep orange when fully ripe.
Each fruit has a large oval grooved seed often called a nut. Palm fruits are technically called drupes, just like the familiar date palm fruit that humans enjoy. The surrounding pulp is peach colored, soft, watery, slightly fatty, but not sweet. They are rather unpleasant to the human taste but parrots enjoy them, in fact, some cockatoo species eat this pulp of red palm fruits like this on a daily basis as part of a wild diet and thrive on it. However, they only eat the pulp and never the seed (nut).
Here you can see a wild Maluku Island cockatoo processing a palm fruit. Notice it scrapes every bit of palm pulp off the nut and does not eat the nut but instead drops the nut.
The white Indonesian cockatoo species (such as Salmon-crested, Umbrella, Goffin's, and sulphur-crested) generally aren't large nut cracking specialists, instead they scrape palm fruit pulp off the nuts. They, however, crack a lot of smaller tree seeds and will chew into large green coconuts. Many palm fruits do not have suitable nut kernels or just aren't worth the cracking effort compared to the ease of eating the nutrient rich fruit pulp off the seed (nut).
The next two palm fruit I want to tell you about contain little if any pulpy flesh and are hard fruits with edible nut kernels. The first is the Macaw palm nut or gru gru palm, (Acrocomia aculeata) other palms in this genus are called Macauba palm. This palm Genus is originally native to the Caribbean south to Argentina. Hyacinth Macaws have been observed feeding upon its nuts in the wild and other Macaw species also readily feed on it. Older dry seeds are favored because they are more easily cracked due to their brittle nature over time. However, unlike the Fox tail palm the kernel is favored and highly palatable to parrots. Macaws eat it as a staple food.
The third species of palm fruit is the most amazing! These are the fruits of the Attalea palm. Like macaw palms, Attalea palms are native to areas with macaws! Southern Mexico to south-central South America. This is a giant beautiful palm that is the FAVORITE food and sometimes the EXCLUSIVE food of Hyacinth macaws and other large macaws. Macaws and these nuts go hand in hand..or should I say nut in beak. You know all the videos of Hyacinth macaws feeding on the ground? Well they are feeding on Attalea palm nuts. When your Macaw is reunited with a macaw palm or Attalea palm nut you will have the privilege of witnessing an age old relationship between macaws and their wild food prey. These two palm species nuts have been serving as food prey for large parrots in the wild for millennia!
The Macaw palm fruit (nut) along with the Attalea fruit (nut) are utilized by parrots exclusively for the kernel (endosperm). Only large nut-cracking parrots (especially Macaws and Palm cockatoos) can handle them with any efficiency, however all medium to large parrots will work on extracting the desirable nut kernels..plus, this IS their natural wild food!
I can provide freshly Foxtail palm, Macaw palm and Attalea palm fruit. One, two, three, four, five pound boxes are available, I can custom pack a box of any weight for you, 10 or 15 lbs.
Shipping using United States Postal Service priority mail.
Foxtail palm fruit is accepted by most parrots large and small and especially by cockatoos.
Macaw palm nuts are cherished by all macaws (except the dwarfs), palm cockatoos and medium to large cockatoos.
Attalea palm nuts are the natural food of medium and large macaws though any large parrot will enjoy breaking them apart to get at the multiple oily kernels.
There are no rules..any parrot will get hours of foraging challenge.
For a limited time I will add ten fresh whole macadamia nuts with your order of two pounds or more.
Your satisfaction is guaranteed or your money back.

@MEGABOINK65
Thanks for asking. Currently, I am not selling on Ebay, though I could post an add on Ebay if you prefer to purchase through them. Currently the way to order is to simply contact me (as you have done) and request an amount (the prices are in the description area under the video screen). To order, just email me your request and I will send you a PayPal invoice for the amount and ship the nuts within the following two days. I can also send you a free sample of two nuts.
