I talk about subliminal priming research, how its done and why it's an important tool for understanding the brain. I also cover some basic differences between conscious and non conscious processing.

  • organic chemistry is great fun... on paper. but in the lab it takes a lot of patience and u have to be very careful not to lose the yield!

  • @realscience1 truth! didn't get a measurable second crop in my first lab.

  • I love how you stepped on Freud... .. I know we stand on "the shoulders of giants" But It pains me that we still teach psychology from a 19th century view, Modern Cog Sci should and will change all that pseudo psychological crap. ( which just enables Pharmo psychiatric profits)..

So big "Ups" on that mention.

I wonder how test subjects are screened, I would imagine that for these types of experimentation, one would need some unaware subjects , I bet they farm finance and law students .. LOL

  • @SuperAkihabara yep! haha. Once I didn't get a yield. I put the liquid in the evaporation device and lost the lot since I had it on the wrong setting so I went into the storeroom and found some crystals which looked like just what i was looking for and there was my yield. it's not like they check or anything hahaha. that's why i didn't do any postgrad organic. it can suck. but yeah great fun drawing those mechanisms. it feels nice and technical.

  • ...unless maybe one develops full awareness of the self as described by Fromm in The Art of Loving.

I tried to explore my unconscious with unconscious drawings or writings but it is really hard not to let the conscious step in in the process so I moved to a domain where my conscious is absent, i.e. dreams. There are tons on books on interpretation of dreams but I found one that is based on statistics used to build patterns of interpretations, by Calvin S. Hall, I would recommend.

  • Thanks SuperAkihabara, it is really excellent and interesting!

Subliminal messages talk directly to the unconsciousness and since the reaction of the brain to them (non-conscious processing) is faster and uncontrollable I can conclude it is pretty tough to develop a conscious defense system to them.

Unless, with retrospective, one begins to learn what those undesirable subliminal messages are and be on the lookout for them. This would be impossible as it would requires constant attention ...

  • intersting stuff,I hope your exams have gone fine.
