@mooycheese his hands aren't really moving that fast at all. what is brilliant about his playing is that he reinvented the way the guitar is played to meet the aesthetic he was after, and he did it flawlessly. he achieved it through a combination of special tunings, careful selection of musical instruments, and meticulous attention to articulation of notes in his picking, fingering and muting of strings. Try to reproduce the first two measures of the very slow Naked Stalk with his accuracy.

The term "Genius" is thrown around too often in today's society. I think a Genius does something that nobody else is mentally capable of doing themselves. Michael Hedges reinvented how to play an instrument that has been played the exact same way for hundreds of years. That is Genius.

@drinkfloridaoj it doesn't have to be thrash for the musician to get into it. Hedges felt music on a level that few (if any) of us will ever have the privilege of understand. I play guitar in a death metal band, I know what it's like to head bang, but I can also move to this and feel completely in place with the music. Don't spend your time focusing on things you don't understand, just sit back and listen to a master explain music through music.
