  • Greenman,

While reading a blog about proposed floating offshore wind turbines, I got to thinking - one of the issues is with having a big mass (generator) at the top of the 'pole'. Would it not be a good idea to couple the horizontal rotational velocity into a vertical rotating shaft so that the generator could be sited at the bottom of the tower. This has many advantages:

    1. servicing

    2. size of tower required (materials, stiffness etc.)

    3. stability

...and perhaps others I am not aware of

I'm not an engineer. But I'm sure that we have not yet seen the ultimate wind turbine design. will be doing more on wind, and the recent improvements being made in turbine design that are pushing the boundaries.

    have not seen

  • @greenman3610 Have you seen the documentary "Fuel" by Josh Tickell? I found it at the library but I have also found it on YouTube. If so, what do you make of it?

  • @lazyperfectionist1

working out the bugs, getting the costs down.

GM microbe breakthrough paves way for large-scale seaweed farming for biofuels

  • @greenman3610 Further off in terms of working out the bugs or in terms of building the infrastructure?

  • @lazyperfectionist1

have not done it because its further off than wind, efficiency and sun. but the military and airlines are working hard on it, and some recent breakthroughs are promising.

  • You say you'll get into other energy sources. Have you gotten into algae biofuel yet? Have I just missed it?

  • @deedubya286

my understanding, check me on this if anyone knows - is that in Germany, if you are in sightline of a turbine - not just if its on your land - if you can see it -- you get a cut of the revenue.

    They have very little opposition.

In fact, here in the US the vast preponderance is PPIMBY (please put it in my back yard) rather than NIMBY (not in my back yard)

  • I wonder how many objections there would be to the sight of a windmill farm if everyone within, say, one mile of the farm was given free electricity for life. I don't like the sight of windmills either but a deal like that would shut my cake-hole in a hurry.
