Cantonese is referring to the "Canton region where Cantonese is the dialect or Cantonese's sub-dialect. When we referring to Mandarin is the Mandarin Speaker or the Region in the North who's main dialect is Mandarin. Mandarin usually referring to CHina NOT taiwan. Although Singapore and Taiwan speaks Mandarin but they dont identify as Mandarin. They identify themselves by citizenship. Therefore, Cantonese and Mandarin is a regional identity. HK'nese' is also a regional identity.

he's cantonese...it's a chinese thing. we say people from hong kong are cantonese. it's wierd.

though at the same time...i've never heard of anyone being referred to as mandarin...just "chinese" or "taiwanese"

this is really hard to explain... yes cantonese is a language but it's another way to separate chinese people differences since we all look a like, ... hwo should i put this.... it's like mexican and puerto rican... they all relate to spanish ethnicity.... and they both look the same so to separate them u call them puerto rican and mexican while we call chinese, mandarine and cantonese well if u no wat i mean
