Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-75) was a foremost Italian writer and humanist, and friends with Petrach. The Decameron is his most famous work, a collection of raunchy though fablish tales told from different viewpoints, probably written over a period of time, and assembled in their definitive form between 1349 and 1351.

The premise: young Florentines regale one another in the Italian countryside while the black plague decimates their city. Seven young men and three young women escape to countryside villas where - to pass the time - they invent and relate many amusing stories, often with a risque and sexual element. Lively, convivial and revealing, The Decameron has held a lasting influence throughout European and English Literature - including Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. Shakespeare and Keats sourced ideas from this great literary figure and propagator of narrative verse. Read by Nigel Planer, Maimie McCoy, Coral Beed, James Rawlings and Rupert Friend, who all star in the upcoming film based on The Decameron, 'Virgin Territory'. "Seven and a half centuries after they were written, the outrageous bawdiness of these tales, coupled with their delicate language, will make even the grumpiest smile." Rachel Redford, The Oldie

A great read by Nigel Planer for csaword audio books

  • So.... even though the young monk had satisfied his carnal desires with the girl, he still felt a need to go to the wood and bring in some faggots.

  • why go looking for Faggots in the wood? Are not all monks faggots?
