On June 2, 2010, U.S. Representative Martin Heinrich (NM-1) returned from a five-day official trip to Afghanistan.

Rep. Heinrich, who is a member of the House Armed Services Committee, met with military and diplomatic leaders in the region, U.S. troops and humanitarian workers from New Mexico, and conducted oversight of additional forces in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and International Security Assistance Forces.

The purpose of the trip was to meet with troops and discuss issues pertaining to the war, including training and equipping of U.S. forces, reconstruction efforts, combating corruption, and training the Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police.

Rep. Heinrich was accompanied by five other congressmen: Representatives Larry Kissell (D-NC), Frank Kratovil (D-MD), John Kline (R-MN), Duncan Hunter (R-CA), and David Reichert (R-WA).

The delegation spent most of its time in Kabul and Kandahar and was one of the first Congressional delegations in years to have visited Kandahar City.
