The Oceanside Pier has a group of brown pelicans that have become a crowd favorite when it comes time to feeding them anchovies. Check out the feeding of some of these pelicans .These are some very tame pelicans that hang out on the Oceanside Pier and eat anchovie fish from the bait shop and left overs from fisherman. Meet Charlie the pelican and some of his friends as they hang out on the pier and pose for photos and wait for their next meal. These pelicans are brown pelicans and can live up to about 35 years of age. Brown pelicans are also an endangered species and nearly 70% never make it to full maturity. Some of the pelicans on the pier rely on being fed because the lack the skill or ablility to feed themselves. If you are looking for a fun way to spend an afternoon go to the Oceanside Pier and say hi to Ed at the www.pierbait.com shop and buy a bag of anchovies for $4.00 and feed some of the pelicans. Be careful to keep your distance and do not get too close. Oceanside is a great coastal California city to visit about 35 miles north of downtown San Diego. • "Some of the pelicans on the pier rely on being fed because the lack the skill or ablility to feed themselves."

Then why encourage people to feed them?

  • this pier is nasty dirty and the whole damn beach reeks of hell

  • make sure he doesnt make a grab for your cell phone, miracles everywhere

  • oohh i used to live by oceanside i love that beach

  • Classic idiot tourist, I love it when they get bit feeding deer in the mountains.

  • I'm not a member of PETA or a right-winger. I volunteer at a wildlife hospital that specializes in aquatic birds. Many of my patients are Brown Pelicans, so I do know something about them about them.

Yes, humans have destroyed wildlife habitats. The answer is to work to restore wetlands (and other habitats). You can get involved in rescuing wildlife and saving habitats, as I have, if you really care about wildlife. Youll have to clean up your language if you want to be taken seriously.
