The "Saturday Night" song originated in Nigeria well before the 1950s and 70s curfews that urban/interner legends suggest created the song. However, it was Trinidadian calypso singer Aldwyn Roberts "Lord Kitchener" who popularized it in Britain in the late 1940s by repeating the song's one line over and over in different languages. A multitude of folk groups have covered the song, including the New Christy Minstrels, Bud and Travis, the Serendipity Singers, and more. The song has also been a staple of jazz groups as well.

  • Holy cow! My apologies - Amazon .mp3 store is selling this as the SS. I should have paid more attention - the sound is clearly different from that of the SS, and the same Amazon album features "Green, Green" and "Today" by the NCM but listed as SS. I will change the title right away. FWIW - I've been working with Bob Shane of the Kingston Trio to get Amazon the pull some .mp3 tracks labeled as KT that are the Highwaymen and Brothers Four. Amazon won't budge so far.

  • I must be going senile. The Christy Minstrels look totally different than I remembered them. I guess this is how it starts.

  • We appreciate the thought...but sorry guys, not the Serendipity Singers. These are the Christy Minstrels. Randy and crew will probably be a little perturbed.

  • this song is crazy

  • we had this song at school lololololol hageslange

  • I like some of the songs by the Serendipity Singers ,not all their songs. They (seem here to) imitate the New Christy Minstrels and they seem to be bored not knowing what to do to depart from their arrangement.

  • Great post and thank you for bringing back those memories from decades ago!
