The facilities enjoyed by civilians in welfare camps in Vavuniya have earned accolades from the British and French Foreign Ministers.
British Foreign Secretary David Milliband and his French counterpart Bernard Kouchner toured the welfare camps today. Sabaragamuwa Chief Minister Mahipala Herath and Competent Authority for resettlement Major General G.A. Chandrasiri welcomed them. They viewed various places within the camp premises. They exchaged views with the civilians who have taken shelter there.

In response to a query raised by the French Foreign Minister, a Tamil civilian said they served as unofficial prisoners of the LTTE for several years. They are now breathing a sigh of relief after being rescued by the Government. The foreign representatives observed a marketing outlet and a community hall in the camp. They also visited a Field Hospital run by a French medical team in Settikulam. Ministers Rishath Bathiyuddin and Rohitha Abeygunawardena, Northern Governor Dixon Dela, Foreign Secretary Dr. Palith Kohona, Wanni Commanding Officer Major General Jagath Jayasuriya, Senior DIG Nandana Munasinghe and Vavuniya District Secretary P.S.M. Charles were present on this occasion.
