Diggers, like Familists, Ranters, early Quakers and others, had progressive answers to their own poverty in 1640s England

  • Cheers for this song! [its not by Dick tho';its an old song] long ago I took part in a celebration of the diggers on St Georges hill [now a luxury golfcourse and private estate!] we planted trees and crops. And thought about our brave anscesters.Check out the British Protest/activists; THE LAND IS OURS.Thankyou!

  • Thank you for writing, Hellishhorse---I really appreciate it coming from somebody who was there on St. George's Hill and also honors brave ancestors. Lord, will there ever be enough luxury golf courses? They are devouring once again the "common" people's resources even in countries where, ecologically, they are sure to bring disaster. "Ye poor, take courage!" the song says. I hope we all soon get it together and change the way we're going....

  • He's called Dick Gaughan - that's gaughan, not gowan. Pronounce gocken, but the ck is more of a ch.

And please, he's not Scotch: he isn't golden in colour and in a bottle. He's Scottish.

Apart from that (sorry, I'm a grumpy Scotsman) - you did the song well. Cheers.

  • Everyone knows that this song is by Leon Rossleson! Not Dick Gaughan. Rant over... well maybe not. Leon is a great songwriter. Dick rocks as well.

  • Nice job.

  • gerard winstanley from wigan england. my town

  • Gaughan always credits Rosselson (and all others whose songs he covers). And yes, this is a relatively recent song. Most accessibly, it was re-recorded on RosselSongs in 1990. But frankly, Gaughan does the best rendition of it, although Bragg comes close.

  • @Hellishhorse It's not by Dick Gaughan nor is it a traditional song. It's a modern song by Leon Rosselson

  • Looks like we are heading back in the same direction, so it is as topical as it was in 1649,when it happened, not when it was written

  • He's American, leave him alone. At least he knows where Scotland is...I think! :-)

  • Good version, good guitar playing only problem is,Dick's surname is pronounced

using the gh as ch as in loch
