The railroad station was ragged and old
The boards on the windows were weathered and cold
But something did cause me to wander around

Saw an old man, he was there all alone
using the sunlight to warm up his bones
I said "If you are a railroad man,
why don't you sing me a railroad song?"

I thought I could hear "clickety-clack, clickety clack"
The trains were here, "clickety-clack, clickety clack"
All those ties and all that track
are singin' a railroad song

I wanted to sit there and talk for awhile,
study the moves of his blue-collared style
He said "It's late, but before I go
I'm gonna sing you a railroad song"

"You shoulda been here when the trains were here
You shoulda came around when the trains were around
take a look down, you can still hear the sound
ain't that a railroad song?"

I thought I could hear "clickety-clack, clickety clack"

Now when I turned back I wanted to see
if it really was true, decided to do
like he'd told me to do
And I could swear by the tone
of the train whistle moan
I could still hear the railroad song

When I turned around the old man was gone
He never did sing me the railroad song
I bet he rode off on his Cannonball
singin' his railroad song
