I bet you could do some crazy stuff if you threw upside down.

I can respect that. I think that many things in the art world, especially ceramics, are taken far to seriously as "law". I have seen beginners struggle needlessly and get frustrated when it only took leveling the wheel to get them going in the right direction.

i don't think thats totally right the Japanese use a slanted wheel for big bowls etc sometimes and shorter stuff will be ok but what about tall stuff say a 20" vase the angle is magnified the higher you go bringing the weight of clay further and further over surely the taller thin pot will collapse or twist as you could be bringing the center of gravity past the pot wall to one side

ugh...i really miss this...i used to go to pottery club after school every day for about 2 hours a day...that was the highlight of my day however it costed way too much i think i was the one who costed them...i think i had used at least 5 blocks of clay that year!

While you have shown that it can be done, you won't have to compensate for anything if the wheel head is level. I would also argue that if your wheel head is drastically off level it is easier to compensate than if the wheel is off only slightly. Now my question is, "Why not level your wheel if you have the ability to do so?

@randallmoody I have heard so many times that it needs to be level to NASA recommendations. I was throwing one day and it was off enough that my tools were rolling off and it hit me funny that I was throwing just fine so made a video to poke a little fun at a topic some take soooo seriously.
